Nominate an Elementary Teacher to Win the $10,000 National History Teacher of the Year Award
Do you know an outstanding K-6 teacher who inspires students to learn about our nation’s history? Nominate them today for the National History Teacher of the Year award. Elementary (K-6) teachers must be nominated by February 1 to be eligible for the 2013 award. Any full-time educator who teaches American history (including state and local history) is eligible. American history may be taught as an individual subject or through social studies, reading, language arts, and other subjects.

Humanities Texas is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for our 2012–2013 Outstanding Teaching Awards! Each year, Humanities Texas presents awards recognizing and encouraging excellence in teaching the humanities in Texas schools.
This year, Humanities Texas will present a total of fifteen awards. Twelve teachers across the state will be selected to receive theOutstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award.
One Texas history teacher will be selected to receive the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award, an award established in memory of Ms. Howell, former chair of the Humanities Texas Board of Directors, as a lasting tribute to her service to the organization and her commitment to the study of Texas history.
Two additional teachers will be selected for the new Award for Outstanding Early-Career Teaching. This award recognizes exemplary contributions of early-career humanities teachers in Texas elementary, middle, and high schools who have completed three or fewer years of teaching.
Recipients for all distinguished awards will receive $5,000, with an additional $500 for their schools to purchase instructional materials.
ELIGIBILITY
Nominees for the Outstanding Teaching of the Humanities Award must be full-time Texas teachers of such humanities subjects as history and social studies, literature and language arts, government, world cultures, or any foreign language. Teachers of art, drama, and music are also eligible if they emphasize the history, criticism, and theory of the arts in their instruction.
Only teachers of courses in Texas history are eligible for the Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History Award.
Nominees for the Award for Outstanding Early-Career Teaching must be full-time teachers in Texas public or private schools who have three or fewer years of classroom experience. Teachers of English and language arts, foreign languages, history, and social studies are eligible for this award, as are teachers of art, drama, and music are also eligible if they emphasize the history, criticism, and theory of the arts in their instruction.
Nominees should be skillful and dedicated teachers who possess an expansive and profound knowledge of the humanities subject(s) they teach. Nominees should also have a record of active involvement in community activities and professional organizations, particularly those that promote the humanities. Previous award recipients are ineligible to apply.

Nominate a Teacher for TAGE Geography Award
The K-12 Distinguished Teaching Award is national award designed to recognize and support excellence in geography teaching among elementary, middle, and high school teachers. National Council for Geographic Education proudly honors teachers who have displayed continued dedication to geographic education. Award recipients will receive recognition within the geographic education community and a plaque at the National Conference on Geography Education in San Marcos, TX, in October 2012.
Nominators must be NCGE members, but any K-12 teacher may be nominated for this award. Applications are reviewed by an NCGE task force and evaluated for teaching skills, leadership, professional development accomplishments, involvement in student activities, and development of innovative teaching materials and strategies. Nominations Wanted for National History Teacher of the Year Award
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is seeking nominations for the annual $10,000 National History Teacher of the Year Award, given to the best American history teacher in the United States. The National History Teacher of the Year is chosen from outstanding history teachers in each state, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and Department of Defense Schools. The award is sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, HISTORY® (the History Channel), and Preserve America.
Nominations for the National History Teacher of the Year can be made by a student, parent, colleague, principal or school administrator familiar with the teacher’s work. State winners are awarded $1,000 and each winning school receives an archive of books and other resources. Each winner is honored in a ceremony in his or her home state.
Elementary school teachers (K-6) and middle and high school teachers (7-12) will be considered in separate categories, in alternate years. In 2012, middle and high school teachers (7-12) will be honored. To be considered for the 2012 award, nominations must be made by February 1, 2012.
